Shesrig Ladakh was established in 2017 as the first dedicated art conservation studio and practice in Ladakh, with a vision to address the growing need for professional and sustainable conservation of the region's rich cultural heritage. Founded by a team of heritage professionals and conservators, the organisation began by undertaking conservation projects focused on wall paintings, thangka paintings, manuscripts, museum collections, and historic structures across Ladakh and the Himalayan region.
Over the years, Shesrig Ladakh expanded its work beyond conservation treatments to include heritage documentation, research, museum development, community engagement, and capacity-building initiatives. Recognising the need for a stronger institutional framework to undertake larger collaborative projects and community-based programmes, Shesrig Foundation was established as a Section 8 Company in 2023.
Today, Shesrig Foundation works towards the preservation, documentation, and sustainable management of Himalayan cultural heritage by collaborating with local communities, monasteries, government agencies, academic institutions, and international partners. The Foundation is committed to promoting traditional knowledge systems, building local capacities, and developing sustainable approaches to heritage conservation in the Himalayan region.
Noor is an art conservator, heritage professional, and educator from Ladakh with over a decade of experience in art conservation and heritage management. She is the founder of Shesrig Ladakh and Shesrig Foundation, established with the vision of creating sustainable conservation practices and building local capacity for preserving the rich cultural heritage of Ladakh and the Himalayan region.
Her work spans the conservation of wall paintings, thangka paintings, manuscripts, museum collections, and historic architecture across the Himalayas. She has collaborated with monasteries, government agencies, academic institutions, and local communities on numerous conservation and documentation projects. Through Shesrig Foundation, Noor is committed to promoting community-led conservation, preserving traditional knowledge systems, and strengthening heritage management practices in the region.
Dr. Safiya Sherrin M K is a passionate advocate for the conservation of Himalayan architecture, driven by her deep appreciation for the region's unique cultural heritage and beliefs. Although a Critical Care Physician by profession, her extensive travels and personal research have equipped her with a profound understanding of the historical and cultural significance of art and architecture in the Himalayan region.
She co-founded Shesrig Foundation in order to document and restore endangered architectural sites in the region. She emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices in preservation efforts and aims to expand the work of Sheshrig Foundation to the social and infrastructural development of Ladakh, in future. In her free time, she enjoys exploring the stunning landscapes of the Himalayas and sharing stories about its rich architectural legacy.
